The greatest dilemma is in deciding upon the scent - there's an endless selection out there! Single fragrances or combinations of a number of, they're all attainable at candle making supplies retailers everywhere. Whichever you opt for, make certain to use oil-based candle producing fragrances. Alcohol- or water-based fragrances won't combine with candle wax.
Now there are 3 sorts of wax to select from. The candles we are most familiar with are made with paraffin wax. Soy, palm and beeswax are recognized as natural waxes. Both soy and palm wax come from vegetable sources. Beeswax has its own honey fragrance which may well interfere with your selected scent. Last is gel wax which comes in 3 densities - low, medium and high. Use high density gel wax as it absorbs fragrance oils much better.
Now that you have your wax and scents, make certain your equipment is at hand. You will want a double boiler - just set a tiny pot or tin in a bigger pot with boiling water on the stove. You will also have to have a stirrer produced of plastic or metal, thermometer that measures up to 300 degrees F, jars, containers or molds for your candle, wicks, and of course, your chosen fragrance oil. As a safety precaution, have a chemical fire extinguisher on hand.
Cover a level surface with old newspapers and place your molds on them. You can use candle creating molds or clean jars, tins or containers that can take high heat. Tie the wicks around sticks and center them on the rims of the molds.
If utilizing paraffin, soy or palm wax, melt in a double boiler. Gel wax can be melted in a pot directly over the heat, just watch that it does not get too hot as it can ignite. Stir gently and check the temperature do not go over 170-180 degrees for paraffin and natural wax, and 200-220 degrees for gel wax. In contrast to paraffin and natural wax which turn watery when melted, gel wax is melted when it reaches a syrupy consistency.
Eliminate the pan from the heat and turn it off. Add your favored scent, about 1 oz. of fragrance oil for just about every pound of wax need to do, and gently stir to disperse all through the wax. You could use a little extra but bear in mind that moderation is greater than overkill. You do not need to smell the candle from the driveway. Now meticulously pour the wax in your prepared molds and center the wicks. Wait at least 6 hours and when the candles are absolutely cold, you can unmold your candles. They can also remain in the containers if you prefer.
Now, light that candle and delight in the aromatic fruits of your labor.
